Singing Author Visit

My fall 2008 visit to Coventry Elementary School in Yorktown, VA. This my “Storytime Boogie,” a song I sometimes use as a program closer for younger students. The song encourages reading at bedtime. I love these kindergartners’ bobbing heads.

When a school invites me for a visit, I send a batch of advance materials, including a music CD of the Storytime Boogie, so these kids were already familiar with the song. But even when it’s new to them, soon heads are bobbing and hands are clapping.

Five Little Crocodiles

Video from an April 2010 visit to Pearce Elementary School in Greensboro, North Carolina. Here, an energetic batch of kindergartners and first graders helps me recite “5 Little Crocodiles.” I love how students always seem to love jumping in enthusiastically on the line “FOR GOODNESS SAKE!”

On Creative Language:

An author visit to a school in Virginia Beach, talking to 2nd graders about using poetic, creative language.

Video is very low resolution but the audio is fairly clear except for the squeaky lunchroom seats!

My Evil Inner Editors

Students get a lot of laughs viewing my “Evil Inner Editors,” but they’re also glad to hear that even authors struggle with first drafts and revisions.
