Author School Visits with Kim Norman

A school visit by a children’s book author is an exciting way to promote literacy. I love to visit schools and share with students the joys of writing and reading. I’ve spoken to around

FIFTY THOUSAND STUDENTS at this point. Whew!

Presentations for my author school visits are designed to follow the Virginia SOLs (Standards of Learning.) Author visits for elementary schools are a bit different than those for middle schools, so–of course–I’m happy to tool presentations to meet the curricular needs of each school assembly. I have as much fun talking to round tables of Young Authors as I do at large school assemblies. See testimonials below, as well as a downloadable brochure, below right.

Testimonials from educators who
have hired me for author school visits:

Kim, your author visit was a BIG hit with the children at King and Queen Elementary! They were thrilled to meet a “real” author. I heard the 4th graders chattering for days afterwards about the reader’s theater performance and the “Evil Editor” pictures! Thanks again,
Mary Acree, Title One Reading Specialist
King and Queen Elementary School, Mattaponi, Virginia

I speak for all the second grade teachers when I say we loved it! Our students were very engaged and interested. Some of our students still talk about many of the things that they learned.
Christine Meredith, 2nd grade teacher,
Veterans Elementary School, Hannibal, Missouri

Your presentations were all wonderful, and our students and staff are still talking about you! Thank you for visiting Randolph. I am recommending you to other schools seeking author visits.
Carolyn Fleming, Librarian
Randolph Elementary School, Arlington, VA

Although I only got to see the program for the younger students when you came, I heard great things about your program for the older kids as well.  Your presentations are such fun that the students hardly realize that they are learning while being entertained.  We are so grateful for your wonderful sharing of time and talent! We hope to see you again!
Patty Waller, Library Media Specialist, Bayside Elementary School, Virginia Beach, VA

Kim Norman's author visit was a HUGE success for our kids and their families! We welcomed Kim at Gocio Elementary in Sarasota, Florida to visit our Partners in Print literacy night. What a thrill it was for our kids and their parents to meet a "real author!" They were engaged from the minute Kim started sharing her journey as a writer right through the reading of her wonderful books! Students were more than excited to take their new book home and share it with their other friends at school. This was one of the best family involvement activities of the year!
Susan Callahan Nations, Intervention Teacher
Gocio Elementary School, Sarasota, FL

My students were fascinated at the thought that we were really going to meet the writer of the stories we read in our class. She made us laugh & made us feel like she wrote her stories for us!
Megan Craig, kindergarten teacher
Veterans Elementary School, Hannibal, Missouri

The presentation was very engaging for both the students and teachers. Giving everyone a book was a nice added touch and surprise! Thanks!
Abby Wellen, Columbia Academy, Columbia, Maryland

Our students enjoyed Kim’s author visit. She spoke to the different age levels at their level. She encouraged participation and elicited questions from them.
Cathy Louk & Linda Cook
Thoroughgood Elementary School, Virginia Beach, Virginia

Even our reluctant readers and writers were mesmerized by Kim’s engaging author presentations. She skillfully combined reader’s theater, humor and song to deliver her message about the writing process. Her exuberant personality, as well as her obvious passion for writing, served as an inspiration for our students and staff.
Kim Kroes, reading specialist
Thompson Elementary, Marshall, Virginia

Kim’s genuine affection for the students is obvious. She puts a great deal of thought into preparation and is flexible and responsive when adjustments need to be made.
Elizabeth (Libby) Edwards,
Bass-Ho0ver Elementary, Stephens City, Virginia

Kim, you met all of our expectations. Your humor, talents, and visuals all made for a great presentation!
Lisa Ruffieux, assistant principal
Coventry Elementary School, Yorktown, Virginia

Kim Norman will hold the audience’s attention no matter what the age. She presented with enthusiasm, humor and used a wide variety of learning styles to fit every child’s needs. Our students were thrilled to participate in reader’s theater directed by Kim and to sing along with her when she sand her original song, “The Storytime Boogie.”
Carolyn Law, librarian,
Claude Thompson Elementary, Marshall, Virginia

This was an entertaining performance that showed the importance of reading and writing. It also showed that if first you don’t succeed, try,
try again.
Michelle Sowerby, library media specialist
Robertson Elementary, Suffolk, VA

Kim Norman inspired our elementary students with information about authors and the writing process. Her interactive presentation, including students from the audience, made a positive impression with our faculty and parents.
Cornelia Turrittin, Title 1 Reading Specialist
Whythe Elementary, Hampton, VA

Kim was just what we needed for our students. She spoke as an author, shared her books, discussed how she got ideas and involved them in a Readers’ Theatre.
Great job!
Frances Robb, elementary English lead teacher
Suffolk Public Schools

Kim was funny, engaging and so real. The children and staff, as well as parents, were intrigued with her style and knowledge of the writing process.
Marypat Warter, principal
Claude Thompson Elementary, Marshall, Virginia

I’ve started a collection of refrigerator magnets bought in states in which I’ve done author visits. Tacky, but fun. What’s a kitchen without something a little kitsch?
