No, I’m not so old that the only pictures of me are in black-and-white. The performance photos below appeared in a black-and-white newspaper, The Smithfield Times.

I have spent a lot of time on stage—that not-shy thing again—so there are lots of photos of me hamming it up. (Plus, I’m usually all made-up, with fake eyelashes and everything when I’m on stage, so it’s about as glamorous as you’ll ever see me.)
Here’s a photo taken before I learned how to glue on fake eyelashes. I’m the 8-year-old with her belly hanging out of that too-small shirt. Don’t know what I was thinking with that fashion choice.

I remember the exact day this photo was taken because—back in that pasture behind us—was a horse that BIT me later that day! (Or maybe it happened before this photo was taken. I don’t look very happy, do I?)

This was taken while on vacation in Maine where my grandparents lived. It’s a crowded photo with my parents, grandmothers, brother (the goofy kid with his chest puffed out) and foster siblings.
I loved wearing this costume as the Mother Superior in a production of the Broadway musical, Nunsense.
Writing is a much quieter activity, so I don’t have any photos of that. It’s not as glamorous, but it’s just as fun for me... plus, I don’t have to stay up late. I can write in the morning when I’m at my best. I love creating a world inside my head, then finding the words to describe that world to you.

I finished my first picture book manuscript nearly a dozen years ago, just before sunrise, after putting my son back to sleep in his crib. I’ve learned a lot since then about reading, writing and revising, (the “three Rs” of writing.)
I sang with a big band occasionally, until I decided I didn’t like staying up past my bedtime. Boy, you can really see those fake eyelashes in this photo, can’t you?
